This furniture form was first invented by a captain Davenport in the early 19th century to be accomodated in the confines of a ships cabin. They became popular in the Victorian home, reaching their hieght around 1860. This example draws its inspiration from that period. The desk is veneered in carefully selected English Walnut chosen for its rich grain and colour and inlaid with the finest of marquetry urns. The piano top opens to reveal a bank of drawers and leathered writing surface. One side of the desk has a further bank of drawers and on the other a dummy panel concealing the wieght and pulley mechanism that when activated riases the pigeon holes from the superstructure.
